The Tramontana Artist Residencies in Central Sudetes 2026 took place from 17 to 31 August 2026 at the Muchomorek Creative Work Centre in Kamionki, Pieszyce Commune, Lower Silesia, Poland. The programme hosted three artists – Mariana Bártolo (Portugal/Germany), Diogo Pereira (Portugal) and Małgorzata Suś (Poland/Portugal) – whose projects combined artistic research, fieldwork and engagement with the local landscape and community.
During the residency, Małgorzata Suś developed “Water Cultures”, investigating relationships between water, landscape, memory and embodied experience. Her work included meetings with local residents and research around streams, springs and other water sites in the Kamionki area. On 28 August 2026, she presented “Water Trails – guided walk in search for water”, a participatory walk combining movement, improvisation, creative exercises and reflection on local water environments.
Diogo Pereira developed an artistic research project focused on the cultural and social history of the Kamionki landscape. Its final outcome, “the diaphanous veil of a tale”, was presented on 30 August 2026 at the Muchomorek Creative Work Centre. The video essay connected the local legend of the seven sisters with the historical development of the textile industry, transformations of common land and changing relationships between territory, labour and local communities.
Mariana Bártolo continued her research project “The Loss of the Night”, exploring the disappearance of natural darkness, light pollution and the cultural, emotional and environmental meanings of the night. Her residency included field research and the collection of local experiences and memories related to darkness and the nocturnal landscape. The project was presented as a 20-minute nocturnal audio-walk on 30 August 2026 in Kamionki.
Overall, the residency addressed themes of water cultures, local history and folklore, transformations of the rural landscape, industrial heritage, memory, environmental change and the loss of natural darkness. Activities took place primarily in Kamionki and its surrounding landscape, as well as in Pieszyce, combining artistic production with community encounters, interviews, walking-based research and public presentations.
